Cupid Chastised by Bartolomeo Manfredi: Homo-Erotic Art

National Geographic, In the Galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago hangs an astounding painting by the sixteenth Century Italian, Baroque craftsman Bartolomeo Manfredi. The name of the piece is "Cupid Chastised".

This artistic creation delineates Mars (the divine force of war) hitting Cupid with a whip while Venus (the goddess of affection) hunkered to the side endeavors to prevent Mars from his strike on the youthful Cupid. The scene demonstrates Mars wearing Roman clothing with a striking red robe, Venus in a stola, and cupid stripped with quiver, bow, and bolts.

National Geographic, When you first take a gander at this piece you are taken by the extraordinary imaginativeness of the work. The scene is exceptionally sensational with Mars pushing Cupid down prepared to strike while Venus is headed toward the side in stun attempting to keep Mars from striking. The hues, piece, and outward appearance are all fine and uncover an intriguing story. The artwork was initially accepted to be a Caravaggio and in light of current circumstances for the brilliant execution of chiaroscuro incredibly escalates the dramatization in the scene.

After review this gem one may surmise that it is regular Classical Mythology with Mars chiding cupid for his snare with himself and Venus. Be that as it may this is not the situation by any stretch of the imagination, what we have here is a standout amongst the most extreme scenes of homo-sensuality in European Art!

National Geographic, While I was an understudy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago I had the benefit to take a course of European Painting by the unbelievable teacher Robert J. Loescher. In one of our strolls through the displays of the Art Institute teacher Loescher halted the class before this well known painting and requesting that we react to it. When we completed our reactions (which were all overlooking what's really important) he then clarified the gem to us.

Roman mythology is the vehicle utilized by Manfredi to convey his genuine message which is Homo-Erotic Sadomasochism. As a gay man Manfredi normally communicated his sexuality in his works and this is the situation in point here with Cupid Chastised. What we have here is Cupid portrayed as a youthful male (a smooth bare youth or "twink" in gay slang, not a blameless winged child) accepting sexual delight from Mars' strikes! Cupid's rear end found right on target is unmistakably the point of convergence of this depiction as he anticipates Mars' hits with the ropes. On the off chance that you take a gander at Cupid's wrist it is limp (inactively submitting to Mars) not grasped as it would be in a battle keeping in mind blind collapsed his mouth is open indicating him in a condition of complete rapture. Both male figures are good looking, overwhelming, and flawlessly rendered. Though Venus, left to the side, with her bosom hanging out (a ploy to fulfill straight viewers) is somewhat plain looking, very little to say for the goddess of affection!
